Anthologie de la poésie française

The Anthologie de la poésie française /Anthology of French Poetry (Guilde du Livre, 1942 and Corrêa, 1943) was the brainchild of Henri-Louis Mermod and entrusted to Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz to steer. In 1942, the latter asked Alice Rivaz to prepare it (cf. Traces de vie, January 1943, p. 27). She researched and selected the poems, wrote the biographical notes and compiled the bibliography for each author. C.F. Ramuz advised her and recommended her to people who could provide information. This is how she met Marcel Raymond, a specialist on Pierre de Ronsard and a connoisseur of French poetry. C.F. Ramuz wrote the preface. Even though Alice Rivaz spent two years on this project and did the lion’s share of the work, only C.F. Ramuz’ name appears on the cover!

Contrary to popular belief, the publisher was responsible for this ‘redaction’, not C.F. Ramuz:

At all costs, I would like to avoid mentioning “in collaboration with Alice Rivaz” on the cover. This would adversely affect sales [...]. If Miss Rivaz insists on her name being mentioned, we can perhaps include it, but we would like it to be as discreet as possible, and in any case not on the cover.

In the end, Alice Rivaz’ name does not appear on the cover nor inside either of the two tomes...
