Short stories

Alice’s short stories form two collections, Sans alcool (1961) and De mémoire d'oubli (1973). Reminiscent of the work of Katherine Mansfield, whom Alice Rivaz admired, they capture objective details, such as a tombstone, a woman in a café, or new techniques for delivering a political speech, inviting readers to reconstruct the complexity of being in the world and the tension women and men face in modern society.

The short stories in this collection all comprise unvarnished language, a smooth unemphatic narrative, a striking choice of words, and depictions that assume a distinctive intensity.

The collection of nineteen short stories, De Mémoire et d’Oubli (Of memory and oblivion), was published in 1973, when Alice Rivaz was in the prime of her art.
